The Areas - History and Features
Casole d'Elsa, in the heart of Tuscany, is an ancient Etruscan settlement situated on a hill over looking a valley. In the 12th and 13th centuries it was a strong hold of the Bishops of Volterra. Their dominance however, ended in 1260 when the city of Siena took control of the entire area.
Given it's hill top position, it occupied an ideal defensive situation which was further improved by the construction of 2 large circular towers on the eastern wall. These towers still exist today.
Historically, architecturally and artistically interesting towns and cities, like Florence, Siena, Volterra, San Gimignano, Poggibonsi, Abbadia and Monteriggioni are all close by and within easy reach of Cielsereno.
